Plastic limit load analysis of elbow with local thinning

Based on analysis of three dimension finite element models of the elbow with a local thinning, the effect of the local thinning on the plastic limit load of the elbow under the combined action of the internal pressure and a bending moment was investigated. The plastic limit load of the elbow is related with the pattern of the local thinning, and the axial size, circumferential size and the depth of the local thinning have a different influence on the plastic limit load. The ratio of the bending moment to the internal pressure also has an influence on the plastic limit load of the elbow. The variation of the plastic limit loads of the elbow with a local thinning and the failure modes under different conditions were presented.
