Preparation and characterization of polymethyl methacrylate/polystyrene (PMMA/PS) composite light scattering material

A polymeric scattering material with high transparence and high light scattering ability was prepared by polymerization of methyl methacrylate(MMA) in the presence of the scattering additive substance.Characterization of its optical properties indicated that the transmittance and haze of the polymer composite could be adjusted by changing the content of the scattering additive substance.With increasing of the additive substance content,the transmittance decreased and the haze increased.The maximum transmittance of the resulting material was 85% with the haze 80%.IR spectroscopy indicated that the matrix of the light-scattering material was polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA).The molecular weight distribution was between 3.0 and 3.5,and the polymeric material had a bimodal molecular weight distribution since the polymerization was carried out in two stages at different temperatures.The microstructure of the material showed that polystyrene(PS) was dispersed homogeneously in the PMMA matrix,with particles size similar to,or slightly smaller than the wavelength of visible light.With increasing content of the scattering additive substance,the size of PS particles dispersed in the PMMA matrix increased and the extent of distribution decreased.
