Root canal curvature of human maxillary first premolars in buccolingual directions

Objective To determine the frequency and degree of root canal curvature of human maxillary first premolars in buccolingual directions. Methods One hundred and fifteen extracted maxillary first premolars were included in this study. Radiograph of teeth in mesiodistal direction was taken. The canal curvature was calculated with Weine′s method using photoshop5.0 by computer,and the root over 18 degrees was considered being curved . Root canals were classified according Vertucci′s classification. Results The total 20% of maxillary first premolars in buccolingual directions had curved root canals. The premolars with one root canal did not curve obviously. The majority of curved root canals in buccolingual directions occurred in the teeth with two roots and two root canals, and 37% of the teeth with two roots had curved root canals. The curvatures were located in the apical region . Conclusion The curved root canals in buccolingual directions are mostly found in human maxillary first premolars with two root canals。
