Effect of removing separated instrument from root canal with ultrasonic tips of ET20 and ET40

Objective To evaluate the effect of removing separated instrument from root canal with ultrasonic tips-ET20 and ET40. Methods After preparing straight-line access to a canal using GG bur or ultrasonic tips with the naked eyes or under microscopes, 163 broken instruments in canals were treated with ET20 and ET40. Results A total of 145 among 163 separated instruments in canals were removed. The ratio of removal was 100% in front teeth, 97% in premolar, and 85% in molar respectively. The mean was 89%. The ratio of removal was 11% if separated instruments located below the curve of canal. By contrast, it was 98% above the curve of canal. The ratio of enlarging instruments removal was 98%, fissure burs 100%, broaches 50%. Seven of (4%) 163 cases were perforations, 5(3%) cases formed bypath in canal. The cases that separated instruments went past the apical foramen were 2 (1%). Conclusion Optional effect of ultrasonic tips-ET20 and ET40 removing most of separated instruments was achieved. However, it was difficult to retrieve the separated instruments, which was below the curve of canal.
