"The unity of heaven and man" philosophical ideology is one of the most important philosophic thoughts in Chinese traditional culture, which had an important effect on the orientation of the development of Chinese gardens. These gardens are complex artistic works and universal pictures composed of buildings and constructions, hills and waters, flowers and trees, with poetic and picturesque connotations, used for recreation and touring. The design is either imitating the heaven or mimicking the earth, from simple simulation to the ultimate creation,so that the gardens look as if created by God through built by man. This is the concrete presentation of the world outlook of "the unity of heaven and man".The paper first gives a brief introduction of the origin of the "the unity of heaven and man" philosophical ideology, then analyzes its expression in Chinese classical gardens, finally points out the guiding significance of this philosophy to the modern garden construction, and concludes that the designing idea of modern gardens are respecting the nature, returning to the nature,people-centered,friendly coexistence between human and nautre. The purpose of all this is to realize the sustainable development of man, nature, culture, ecology, city, and society.
