STUDIES ON THE ROOT SYSTEMS OF THE MIXED STAND OF PINUS TABULAEFORMIS AND ACER TRUNCATUM IN XISHAN (WESTERN HILLS) REGION, BEIJING

Zhai Mingp
Root systems of average sample trees from sample plots in a 25 year old pine-maple mixed stand were compared with those from sample plots ina nearby pure pine stand of similar age,in respects of morphology, distribution, biomass and mineral contents. The results showed that the fine-root (less than 2mm in diameter)biomass per pine tree in the mixed stand is 14% higher than that in the pure stand; the phosphorus contentper unit weight of pine root is doubled than that in the pure stand......etc.The general conclusion is that the site conditions under the mixed stand are favorable to the growth of pine roots and provide normal growth for maple. This fact suggests that such mixture of pine and maple is adequate.
