An Advanced Study on the Cause of Pollen Abortion in Bisexual Flowers of Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge

Comparative studies on the development of the tapetum andpollen wall and the analysis of polypiptide,glycoprotein,peroxidase isozyme,esterase isozyme,free amino acid,and soluble sugar in bisexual and unisexual flowers of Xanthoceras sorbifolia have been done using the light microscope,the electron microscope and techniques of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE),and polyamide thin membrane as well as thin layer chromatography.The results of investigations show that there is no notable differences in the development of the tapetal cells and pollen walls between bisexual and unisexual flowers.But the intine of the pollen grain is thicker.The quantities of organelles,starch grains,sucrose and the variety of amino acids in bisexual flowers are less than that in unisexual flowers.The isozymes and polypiptides in bisexual flowers are obviously different from that in unisexual.Hypothetically the cause of pollen abortion in bisexual flowers is due to lack of proper nutrition which is related to the reduction of organelles and metabolic barriers.
