2n pollen of P.tomentosa×P.bolleana induced by four antimicrotubule agents.

Four antimicrotubule agents, colchicine, pronamide, oryzalin, and trifluralin, were evaluated for their ability on inducing 2n pollen of P.tomentosa×P.bolleana. Colchicine was found to be the most effective on inducing 2n pollen among the four inducers, but the weight of pollen was the lest. Although the other herbicides could not induce the rate of 2n pollen as high as colchicine do , more pollen was produced. Pronamide was the best. With 4 times of injection at a concentration of 200?μmol/L, the percentage of 2n pollen could reach 84 4%, and the weight of pollen per catkin reached 0.70?mg. The expense on 10 flowers'treatment by pronamide was only $0.084, much lower than that by colchicine.This study demonstrates that pronamide could be one of the best choice in four antimicrotubule agents for chromosome doubling of Populus.
