Characteristics of seedlings water consumption by transpiration of main afforestation tree species in north China.

Daily changes of transpiration rates of nine main afforestation tree species in north China and the factual water consumption status were studied by Lico 6400 Portable Photosynthesis System and BP3400 Precision Balance etc. The average transpiration rates per day and the factual water consumption rate of the nine plants were compared. The authors obtained the quantity and rate of water consumption by transpiration under the normal water conditions, and compared the characteristics of water consumption in different weather, in different periods including daytime and nighttime. The plants whose average transpiration rates from low to high are Pinus tabulaeformis, Platycladus orientalis, Cotinus coggygria, Caragana korshinskii, Ailanthus altissima, Rhus typhina, Hippophae rhamnoides, Populus tomentosa, Lycium barbarum. The water consumption amounts per day of 5 years old P. tabulaeformis and P. orientalis are (61 7±9 6)g and (39 8±6 8)g respectively, those of one year old P. tomentosa, A. altissima, R. typhina and C. coggygria are (44 8±8 1)g,(53 4±8 8)g,(63 1±14 4)g and (38 4±17 0)g respectively and that of L. barbarum, H. rhamnoides and C. korshinskii are (18 8±5 6)g,(4 8±1 1)g and (33 1±5 0)g respectively. The water consumption rate of P. tomentosa ((1 512±0 767)mmol/(m 2·s))is the largest, those of L. barbarum ((1 319±0 291)mmol/(m 2·s)), H. rhamnoides ((1 266±0 229)mmol/(m 2·s)) and C. korshinskii ((1 337±0 290)mmol/(m 2·s) ) are the second largest, C. coggygria ((0 733±0 199)mmol/(m 2·s)), A. altissima ((0 692±0 378)mmol/(m 2·s)) and R. typhina ((0 561±0 186)mmol/(m 2·s))are less and P. tabulaeformis ((0 122±0 018)mmol/(m 2·s))and P. orientalis ((0 111±0 029)mmol/(m 2·s))are the smallest. The results show that P. tabulaeformis and P. orientalis are the lower water consumption plants, Lycium barbarum and Popolus tomentosa are the higher water consumption plants. By way of studying the water consumption characteristics and the quantity of water consumption, it would be beneficial to afforestation and vegetation reconstruction by selecting tree species of lower water consumption under condition of water deficiency.
