A review on growth models of mixed forests

Multi species forest is an important silvicultural regime for sustainable forest management. With the increasing of the area of mixed forests, mixed forest management is faced with challenges. It is urgent to develop reasonable growth models for prediction and management of mixed forests. The difficulties of mixed forest growth modeling include descriptions of multi species, stand age, site index and competition interaction etc. Much work on these issues is still needed. Three categories of the models, tree level, diameter class level and stand level, are classified according to spatial resolution of growth models. Among them individual tree approaches seem most appropriate to understand stand growth as affected by competition between individuals of different species. Quantification of competition among individuals is of importantce for the model. The future trends including individual tree modelling, hybrid models, three dimensional models, visualization modelling and integration with GIS are discussed.
