Thermodynamic Analyses on Equilibrium Stability of Small Bubble in Water of Xylem

The equilibrium stability of the small bubble in the water of the xylem is studied in the way of thermodynamics. It is analysed in respect both of free energy and force. The results are same. Under high water potential or pressure the small bubble can remain a state of equilibrium stability. When the water potential reduces and reaches a critical value, the bubble expands, then broken down. And a cavity in the tracheid of the xylem is formed. A formula for the critical pressure of water is developed in the paper.
