Study on Culture Media for Larix Gmelini Container Seedling

The culture media consisting of various materials,such as soils from nursery,from grass land or under Mongolian oak forest,needles and sawdust,were tested for raising seedlings of Larix gmelini in containers.The needles mixed with nursery soil in 2∶1(v/v) was proven to be the best one among 14 tested culture media.Growing on this medium for 90 days after sowing,the seedlings height reached 265cm,ground diameter 030cm,dry weight 1751g,and lateral roots per seedling 25.8,corresponding to 1162%,1300%,12383% and 128.82% of the control respectively.The bulk density of the medium was only 045g·cm-33,lowered by 48.9% comparing with the control medium.The better seedling growth may be related to the needles,which significantly increased organic matter,available phosphorus and nitrogen,water holding capacity and microbial activity in the medium.The root system of the seedlings in the medium was infected more intensely by mycorrhiza,beneficial for drought resistance.
