Dialogue and Monologue: Lyrical Patterns of Chuanqi Drama in the Ming and the Qing Dynasties

GUO Ying-de (Dept. of Chinese Language and Literature, BNU, Beijing 100875, China)
Dialogue and monologue are two forms of expression in drama. Dialogue can be divided into three types: the first is the characters speaking on behalf of the authors 1 the second is the expression of inner emotions of the characters; and the third is the dialogue between a subject and an object in the very inner world of the characters. The first two are the basic lyrical patterns of Chuanqi dramas in the Ming and the Qing. They reveal the complex cultural psychology of the dramatists in Ming and Qing times. The varied monologue patterns are handled skillfully. Therefore these plays are different from mainstream forms.
