Political Process and Historical Writing: The Case of Fan Zhongyan’s Demotion in 1036

YANG Guang;Department of History, Peking University;
Knowledge of Fan Zhongyan's demotion in 1036 now derives from the narration of Fan's supporters such as Fu Bi and Ouyang Xiu, which reflected some historical facts in certain respects, yet neglected others in the meanwhile. Actually, at the moment of Fan's demotion, one of his core charges from the court was "taking the initiative in establishing a faction," which indicated that one of Emperor Renzong's main concerns in demoting Fan is his deep connections with high-ups and opinions towards arrangement of cabinet personnel and imperial succession. Affected by the prevailing political culture, Emperor Renzong read these signs as suspicion of factionalism and personal ambition in promoting, thus became vigilant and discontented with Fan. But after Fan's demotion, many inferior officials opposing the edict, such as Yu Jing and Ouyang Xiu, emphasized the tension between Fan and the chancellor as the main reason of Fan's demotion, and viewed factionalism as a false charge. As these opinions emerged and circulated, Emperor Renzong's focus on Fan's factionalism turned from Fan's initiative action of fawning on the high-ups to his connections with these inferior officials. The actions of Ouyang Xiu and his fellows, along with Emperor Renzong's new concern, became a dominant issue in the later era, and eventually shaped our knowledge of Fan Zhongyan's demotion in 1036, while the original reason why Emperor Renzong became suspicious of Fan's factionalism has been long forgotten.
