Study on Arc-added Glow Discharge Plasma Non-hydrogen Carburizing Technology on Surface of Titanium Alloy

A new method, arc-added glow discharge plasma non-hydrogen carburizing on surface of titanium alloy (Ti-6A1-4V), is introduced in this paper. Using this method, the technological properties of Ti-alloy can be enhanced notably. High purity and high strength graphite was selected as cathode arc source. A carburizing layer 25~30 μm thick was obtained in 20~30 min. At the same time, hydrogen brittleness of titanium alloy was avoided. The carburizing layer is composed of TiC. The microhardness of titanium alloy surface attained 936HV after carburizing. The effect of its technical characteristics, including different bias voltage, distance from cathode arc source, arc current, time and temperature, were studied.
