The Effects of Language Aptitude on the Representation of English Mental Lexicon

LI Ai-qin;Yunnan Normal University Business School;
It is to study the effect of language aptitude on the representation of English mental lexicon byusing semantic and non-semantic priming procedure. The result shows that speech coding capacity, languageinduction capacity, grammatical sensitivity and mechanical memory capacity has no independent effect on themental lexicon representation in the task of judging English lexical properties, however, these individual fac-tors influence the mental representation of English Lexicon through word frequency and priming type amongthem. More specifically:(1) Grammatical sensitivity and mechanical memory capacity compensate for each oth-er in the representation of mental lexicon. Low grammatical sensitivity is offset by high mechanical memory ca-pacity, and low mechanical memory capacity is offset by high grammatical sensitivity, which is beneficial tomental lexicon representation.(2) People with low grammatical sensitivity prefer representation of phonologi-cal and semantic mental lexicons. Grammatical sensitivity and language induction capacity compensate foreach other in the representation of graphemic lexicon,(3) Learners with both low grammatical sensitivity andlanguage induction capacity prefer representation of phonological and semantic mental lexicons.
