Understanding Women's Viewpoint on Chastity in Tang Dynasty through the Epitaphs

MAO Yang guang(The Department of History, Shaanxi Normal University, Xi'an, Shaanxi, 710062)
In Tang Dynasty, remarriage, though not a shame, was not common for women. It has been testified by a large number of epitaphs that people's viewpoint on chastity was still conservative. The noble families in upper classes, under the influence of the minority nationalities, formed a view on chastity completely different from that of the women from lower classes. But this is not the main stream. The women's conservative view on chastity in Tang Dynasty has become a source of such a view for women in coming generations.
