Studies of Segmental Somatosensory Evoked Potentials on Patients with Lumbar Disc Herniation and Spinal Canal Stenosts

Pan Ying-fu et al
Segmental (L4, L5, S1) somatosensory evoked potentials (SegSEP) were studied on 16 patients with lumbar disc heriation (LDH) or lumbar-canal stenosis (LCS), and compared with conventional SEP (SEP_L). 14 healthy volunteers were selected as controls. The main results showed: Multi-segmental abnormal patterns were present on those patients with LCS and SEP_L were all abnormal. In those patients with LDH seg SEP would be helpful to detect the location or laterality of the herniated masses. It is suggested that if seg SEP has shown multi-segmental damages or SEP_L abnormalilies the lesion would not be the simple LDH and in case of complication with another damages should be considered.
