Influences of Ca/Si on Nucleation and Crystallization of Calcium Iron Silicate Ferromagnetic Glass-Ceramics

In order to prepare ferromagnetic glass-ceramic used in thermal therapy for tumor, a group of glasses with the nominal composition 40Fe 2O 3·xCaO·(60-x)SiO 2·3B 2O 3·3P 2O 5 was made and their nucleation and crystallization was studied by XRD, DTA and VSM. It was found out that besides magnetite, wollastonite and minor hematite, hedenbergite and cristobaite occurred in the calcium iron silicate glass-ceramics heat-treated at reduction atmosphere. The area of hedenbergite of the glass-ceramics with less Ca/Si ratio was much larger than that with more Ca/Si ratio in the temperature-time phase diagram of heat-treatment. In addition , the nucleation mechanism and the temperature at which the magnetite began to crystallize were different in the glass-ceramics with different Ca/Si ratio.
