New Development of Surface Treatment for Magnesium Alloys

Magnesium and its alloys exhibit an attractive combination of low density,high strength/weight ratio and high damping ability,which makes it an ideal metal for vehicle weight reduction and energy saving.Unfortunately,magnesium and its alloys are exceptionally susceptible to corrosion and this has limited its wide application to the automotive and aerospace industries.One of the most effective ways to prevent corrosion is to coat the base material.Coatings can protect a substrate by providing a barrier between the metal and corrosive medium.This review details the new development of surface modification of magnesium alloys,including those of micro-arc oxidation,aluminum coating,PVD,ion implantation,laser surface modification,etc.The prospect of these technologies is also analyzed.
