Performance of Synergistic Coating on Magnesium Alloy

Magnesium and magnesium alloys exhibit an attractive excellent performance combination low density with strength and stiffness associated with good castability,high damping capacity and electromagnetic shielding.However,the high chemical reactivity of magnesium results in poor corrosion resistance.The synergistic coating by combination plasma electrolytic oxidation and electroless copper plating on magnesium alloy were prepared to improve corrosion resistance and decoration.Optical microscopy and scan electron microscopy associated potential curve were used to investigate the performance.The results show that synergistic coating is composed of substrate,ceramic layer and copper layer,which corrosion potential of synergistic coating is higher above 300mV that of magnesium alloy substrate and corrosion potential of synergistic coating reduces by 8% that magnesium alloy substrate.The bonding strengths of layers in synergistic coating are over 10 times by thermal shock test.
