Evaluation of mental health of naval personnel in military exercise

Objective To explore the psychological health status of naval personnel in a military exercise so as to provide the reference of psychological service for the participants in the exercise.Methods 112 naval personnel were tested by SCL-90 in the exercise.Results ①In the group of naval personnel in the exercise,the scores of each factor and the positive items in SCL-90 were higher than those of the young Chinese norms (P0.05 or P0.01) except for interpersonal sensitivity,and the scores of somatization and depression were higher than those of the norms of Chinese servicemen.② The two factorial (anxiety and psychosis) scores of those from rural areas were higher than those from cities (P0.05).The four factorial (somatization,interpersonal sensitivity,anxiety,psychosis) scores and positive items of those who took part in military exercises were higher than those who didn’t (P0.05 or P0.01).The three factorial (somatization,paranoid ideation and psychosis) scores of soldiers were higher than those of officers (P0.05 or P0.01).③There were significant differences at three factorial score (depression,fear and psychosis) in different battle groups.The scores of submarine personnel were higher than those of marines and surface combatants.The further comparison indicated that five factorial(interpersonal sensitivity,depression,fear,psychosis and additional items) scores and total average scores of submarine personnel were higher than those of marines(P0.05 or P0.01)and that phobia scores of submarine personnel were higher than those of surface combatants(P0.05).Conclusions The level of mental health of the naval personnel in a military exercise is lower than that at ordinary times and that of populace norm and there are significant differences in the level of mental health of the naval personnel in a military exercise depending on the birth place,experience in military exercises,criteria and service branch of the participant.
