A STUDY ON THE ATMOSPHERIC AEROSOL IN WINTER IN THE CITY CENTER AND THE SUBURB RURAL AREA OF BEIJING

Atmospheric aerosol samples were collected in winter using a single orifice 8-stage cascade impactor at a site of the urban center and a suburb countryside site of Beijing. The samples were analyzed to determine the average concentrations of up to twenty elements and their particle-size distributions by means of the PIXE. The aerosol mass concentrations and its particle-size distributions were thus obtained. It is found that the average elemental concentrations in the urban center are higher than those in the suburb, except S and Br. The concentration of the atmospheric aerosol is found to be smaller than that of previous measurement , but concentration of the fine particles increases compared with the value obtained before in the urban ed. The ratfo ρ(Br)/ρ(Pb) in the urban Center and suburb are 0.35, 0.53 respectively. The values are higher than those reported in the literature.
