Maize dwarf mosaic virus strain B (MDMV B) from the northwest of China is identified. MDMV B can infect maize, sorghum and many grasses of Gramineae such as setaria viridis , but not Nicotiana tabacum, N. glutinosa, Chenopodium amaranticolor and Datura stramonium . There are different symptom reactions caused by MDMV B on differential hosts Tianyu 1, Xiongyue 191, Xinliang 7, Xinliang 52, Atlas, Rio, Tamaran, Trudex and Sorghum sudanese . MDMV B cannot infect differential hosts johnsongrass ( Sorghum halepense ) and Clintland. The purified MDMV B is filamentous flexuous particles about (720 760) nm×13 nm, purified virus preparation of MDMV B shows a typical ultraviolet spectrum of nucleoprotein. The molecular weight of MDMV B coat protein is 36 300 consisting of 17 kinds of amino acids. Agar gel double immunodiffusion tests show that MDMV B reacts strongly with antiserum of MDMV B and American antiserum against SCMV MDB. ELISA shows that MDMV B has close relationship with the antisera of MDMV B and SCMV MDB (U.S.A), MDMV B is serologically trapped and decorated by antiserum of SCMV MDB in immunosorbent electron microscopy test, MDMV B reacts with antiserum against SCMV MDB in Dot immunobinding assay. The pinwheel and cylindrical inclusions are observed in the maize cell infected by MDMV B. Based on the studied information, the MDMV B in the northwest of China should be SCMV MDB.
