TECTONIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL SIGNIFICANCE DEDUCED FROM GRAIN SIZE CHARACTERISTICS OF INCOMPACT SEDIMENT IN KUNLUN PASS BASIN

The Kunlun Pass Basin is located at the border area between the Qiangtang Plaeeau and the Qaidam Basin, the hinterland of the Tibet. The late Cenozoic stratum in the basin, 600 m thick, spanning over 3×10 6 a, is very suitable for the study of uplift processes of the Tibet Plateau because of the location and the abundant sediment information. 63 grain size samples are taken form the upper 462 m of the Kunlun pass section, which coved from 2.71×10 6 a BP to 0.72×10 6 a BP. Grain size parameters including standard deviation, mean size and coarse particle content (54 μm) and grain size probability cumulative curves are analyzed. The three grain size parameters curves have unanimous variation trend and six tectonic phases are marked off according to the curves. The analysis results demonstrate that two large scale tectonic movement had happened respectively at the (2 7~1 88)×10 6a BP and (1 07~0 72)×10 6 a BP periods. The former corresponds the Qinghai Xizang movement, and the latter is the Kunlun yellow river movement. The grain size analysis results also show that the ancient lake in Kunlun pass basin formed at 2 25×10 6 a BP and died out at 0 80×10 6 a BP, and that the lake expanded at (2 16~1 07)×10 6 a BP period and shrank at (1 07~0 80)×10 6 a BP period.
