KUNLUN-YELLOW RIVER TECTONIC MOTION AND FORMATION OF MODERN PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY PATTERN OF CHINA

The Kunlun-Yellow River Tectonic Movement is an intense tectonic movement at the turn from Early Pleistocene to Middle Pleistocene. The Movement influenced not only the whole of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau itself, but also the around area. With the movement, the Plateau was uplifted to 3 000-3 500 m in elevation (some part to 4 500-5 000 m) and was brought into the cryosphere, and the pattern of atmospheric circulation was changed, which therefore promoted formation of the pattern of modern East-Asia monsoon. The enhancement of winter monsoon caused more drought in North China, proliferation of deserts, shrink of lakes, the transfer of semi-tropical plants from the north of the Qinling Mountains to the south of it, and the expansion and high rate of loess sediments. Since that time, the modern physical geography pattern of China has been basically established.
