The ground penetrating radar(GPR) can be regarded to some extent as one kind of advanced remote sensing technology applied to the nearing ground surface detection from the point of electromagnetic wave transmission.It can measure changes in the reflection and transmission behavior of electromagnetic wave including magnitude and velocity corresponding to the subsurface features with different dielectric properties.In this paper,a new approach using GPR to estimate soil layered texture is explored.Two research sites in the north and south of China are chosen,and two antenna frequencies(225 MHz and 900 MHz) are specified.The in situ soil sampling and a set of local water table data are utilized for validating the GPR test results.The research results demonstrate the capability of GPR to map the soil layers in depth based on the change behavior of layered soil permittivity.
