Appraise of the doctrine of martensitic shear

LIU Zong-chang(Material and Metallurgy School,Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology,Baotou 014010,China)  
It is generally held that martensitic transformation is a shear process which seemed to be mature theoretically,but it's not true.Herein,all the shear mechanisms proposed since 1930s were analyzed.It points out that all the shear mechanisms are not conform with reality.Moreover,the surface relief mechanism was analyzed by combining the surface relief of bainite and martensite with that of the recently found pearlite.It was clearly stated that the martensite phase transformation mechanism is lack of experimental evidence from analyzing the phenomenon and formation reason for the surface relief of pearlite,bainite and martensite.The formation of the surface relief is the result of the bulk expansion of sample surface caused by the difference between specific bulks of the phase.During the martensite transformation,atoms transit by means of large-scale displacement,which is not the process of ordinary shear transformation.
