The surface relief of martensite in Fe-1.5Ni-0.6C and formation mechanism

The effect of surface relief is regarded as important evidence of martensite shear theory.The alloy samples of Fe-Ni-C were pre-polished,heated up to 1 050 ℃ and insulated for 10 min,then water-cooled.The samples of non-erosion were observed with STM and SEM.The results show that the shape of a single martensite chip's surface relief looks like a tent(∧);the maximum altitude is between 43 nm and 96 nm;the martensite's surface relief is caused by the specific volume increase and the volume expansion during the period of the supercooled austenite transformation into martensite.The martensite shear theory lacks experimental basis.
