Effects of Mg on microstructure and wettability of Al_2O_3p/Al composites

WU Fu-bao,LI Wen-xue,HAN Le,LI Ting (Material and Metallurgy School,Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology,Baotou 014010,China)  
Al2O3p/Al composites with Al2O3 mass fraction of 2% and different content of Mg were fabricated.The effects of Mg on microstructure and wettability of Al2O3p/Al composites were studied.The results showed that with the increase of Mg,the true content of Al2O3 particles increased and Al2O3 particles distributed uniformly in aluminum matrix with the grain boundary distributed spasmodically,which illustrated that Mg could improve the wettability of Al2O3p/Al composites.In addition,α-Al grains refined remarkably when the content of Mg is less than 1%;but after the content of Mg is beyond 1%,Al-Fe compounds appeared with needle strip morphology.Al-Fe compounds and α-Al grains coarsen with increasing Mg.The content of Mg should be controlled strictly,and the optimal content of Mg was 0.1%.
