On the Theory of the Second-Order Wave Forces in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering…

Miao Guoping and Liu Yingzhong
To some extent, many important nonlinear mechanical phenomena of ships and large scale marine structures in waves such as the slowly-drifting motion and the low frpquency resonance of moored structures, the structural springing, the added resistance of ships in waves and the motion stability of single-point mooring systems, etc. can be explained or predicted by means of the theory of the second-order wave forces. Great progress has been made in the investigation of this aspect. The present paper gives a general introduction to the theory of the second-order wave forces and a brief review on the achievements made recently with emphasis on the research work of the Chineso scholars. The difficulties existing in the theory and the tendency of the further investigation are discussed, The aim of the paper is to offer a foundation for the researchers and the designers concerned to further investigate and apply the theory.
