On the buckling of cylindrical shell ring-stiffened by half-tubes under hydrostatic pressure

The pressurized cylindrical shell is generally ring-stiffened in order to enhance its buckling resistance under uniform hydrostatic pressure.In present paper,a new type of ring-stiffener,called the ring-stiffener of half-tube,is introduced in pressurized cylindrical shell structures.A rational design method is developed based on the theoretical and experimental investigations on the buckling of cylindrical shell ring-stiffened by half-tubes under uniform external pressure.The results show that the local buckling load of the cylindrical shell increases because the cylindrical shell ring-stiffened by half-tubes has two connections and its net spacing of adjacent ring-stiffener is shorter than that of the cylindrical shell ring-stiffened by common stiffeners.The global stability of the cylindrical shell is improved because the tripping behavior of half-tube stiffener is better and the moment of inertia increases by means of rational design of the radius and thickness of half-tube stiffener.
