Finite element method based structural optimization for SWATH

The structures of Small Waterplane Area Twin Hulls are usually complicated and need to reduce the structural weight by efficient optimum tools. This paper details the application of size, shape and topology optimization techniques to the structural design of a SWATH ship by using software Altair.OptiStruct, Msc.Nastran and iSIGHT.The optimization is based on the results of linear static analysis obtained from the optimum tools' integrated FEA codes. The objective function is defined as structural mass and the constraint function is the maximum nominal stress of structures.The results indicate that these optimal tools are practical and reliable in application, but the key problem is the definition of loads, design spaces and variables which is associated with engineer's design knowledge and experiences.
