Overview on effect of trigger geometry on the axial crushing behavior of composite components for energy absorption

Trigger is one of the key technologies for the design of composite structures with energy absorption capabilities.Properly designed triggers can make the composite structures produce stable crushing during impact,thus absorb more impact energy.In this paper,the geometry and mechanism of triggers,and the effect of trigger on the axial crushing behavior of composite components are described and discussed in detail.And the available triggers can be summed up in seven typical types.Based on this,some topics for further investigations are pointed out.They are:the influence of strain rate on the trigger mechanism and axial crushing behavior of composite components;the tulip trigger and its application to circular composite tubes;the principle and design method of the SMA(shape memory alloy) trigger;and the trigger and axial crushing behavior of 3D braided composite components.
