On the design features of FPSO structures

Zhao Gengxian
Float production storage and offloading unit (FPSO) has become today a prevailing selection for offshore oil production due to its advantages of less initial cost, capable to move and able to be re used comparing to the fixed platforms. Except for the fixed platforms and few FPSO converted from secondhand oil tankers, China has designed and built five FPSO from mid 1980s, starting from first FPSO "Bohai Youyi". Among the five units, the FPSO "Nanhai Fenjin", the 150 000 tonnage unit with turret mooring system is designed for permanent mooring in South China Sea and will keep in position even in typhoon. The paper discussed in detail eight types of loadings to be considered in hull structure design and basic features of overall strength of hull structure. Discussion is also given to the design of skids for production modules, flame boom and some of results of deck washing obtained from model test.
