THE PALAEOZOIC OPHIOLITE IN THE NORTHERN EAST-QINLING

This ophiolite belt is located on the northern margin of the Qinling (Tsinling)geosyncline between two major massifs(the North China platform and the Yangzi platform) in the eastern part of China: starting from east of lat. 107°E,it stretches for over 600 km,with a width of about 50 km,in an eastwest direction along the line of lat-34°N.Since the late Preeambrian, a nearly-50-km- wide zone on the northern side of the belt and on the margins of the North China platform has evolved as a highly strained zone characterized by multistage tectonic activity. 1300 m.y.ago regional metamorphism of medium-pressure facies series took place twice respectively. Since the Paleozoic, six parallel, near-eastwest-trending faulted depressions (at 10-20 km intervals) have been formed, in which are developed alkali intrusive rocks, calc-alkali zoned volcanic rocks and neritic sedimentary rocks.420 m.y. ago regional thermodynamic metamorphism occurred once, which gave rise to four zones of metamorphic mineral facies, i. e. the chlorite zone,the two-mica zone, the kyanite zone and the sillimanite zone. The gigantic fan structure has reworked the original rocks into the fracture schist series and given rise to "Umfal tungsclivage".The lower part of the section of the ophiolite belt is composed of serpen-tinized dunite, lherzolite and harzburgite. They are mostly intense schistose, with small downward extensions and of discontinuous distribution. Overlying them are layer-like gabbro and norite gabbro, in which dunite fragments are contained.Between them and the metamorphic complexes in the north there is a mylonite zone(nearly 1-2 km wide) of late-stage granitic intrusions.The ultraba-sic masses are cut by the 420-m.y.-old pegmatites, and there is a break of meta-morphism between them and the basic rocks. The middle part consists of the low-potassium andesite-basalt series, in which pillow structure may be occasionally observed, as well as veinshaped and sill-shaped diabase with gabbro inclusions. Upwards they gradually grade to tuffs with siliceous slates, albite slates, limestones and jasperites.They are penetrated by the 340-m.y.-old vein-shaped granite,and the thickness may amount to 5-10 km. The flyschlike sedi mentary formation overlies them; it is composed of graywackes, siltstones and slates, with a thickness greater than 5-7 km.Besides, regional hornfelszation has taken place.The chemical composition of the rocks indicates that the volcanic rocks in this ophiolite belt belong to the TH + CA series. Analyses gave the following results:K2O, 0.5% and in a few cases 3.5%) SiO2, half 46-52% but not in excess of 68% in maximum; Feo + Fe2O3/MgO, less than 0.7 and not in excess of 6.0 in maximum) TiO2,0.1-1.3%; Na2O less than 4.From the above it can be seen that the ophiolite suite in this area is characterized by the features of ocean-crust rocks.From its suffering of repeated regional metamorphism, parallel dispasition of the regional thermody-namic metamorphic zone and the regional hornfels zone (at low pressure anda-lusite appears),substantial intrusion of vein-shaped granite and pegmatite and direct overlying by a very thick suite of turbidites as well as the petrochemical series.it may be judged that during the Paleozoic Era the northern part of the East-Qinling was situated near the boundary between the continental plate and the oceanic plate.
