A R-CALCULATING METHOD FOR THE SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF SILICATES

Specific grmity and refractive index are two basic physical characters of minerals. For a long time, specific gravity of mineral is measured by using density bottles or density balances. The measurement is very dilficult for the small pieces of minerals.This paper tried to discuss a calculating method of the specific gravity for silicates. The relation between density and refractive index is.Here M: weight of a moleculel Ri: the refraction of cation or ion; Ni: numbers of cation or ion.We have calculated 24 minerals of silicates with this method. A comparison with the values in textbook shows that more than 25% of the calculated specific gravity bear an error less than 0.01 and 0.02.Here is the conclusion: The R-calculating method for specific gravity determination is possible.
