PRILIMINARY STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF RED CLAY TO THE KARSTIFICATION OF CARBONATE ROCKS IN NORTH CHINA

The reddish weathering crust developed in carbonate rocks in North China belongs to the Sial-Fe type, which was mostly produced through karstification under warm and humid climate conditions during the 1st and 2st interglacial stage in Quaternary period. Chemical component R2O3 (Al203 + Fe2O3) of the red clay of the weathering crust can reach 22.53 to 30.84%, among which the part of iron oxide influences the charcter of the erosion surface, while aluminium ions control the hydrogen ion concentration in red clay and so the way of karstification. Because the hydrogen ion concentration in red clay is depended upon the content of its exchangeable aluminium ions. When red clay contacts with water, free hydrogen ions in water phase exchange aluminium ions in solid phase equivalently, and the equivalent aluminium ions will be freed from the red clay. The more hydrogen ions exchange with the aluminium the higher the hydrogen ion concentration, the higher the acidity, and the stronger erosion of carbonate rocks; vice versa.The carbonate rock surface covered by red clay takes a variety of karst forms, such as karren, fissure, trough and so on, because karstification always takes place on the surface of carbonate rocks, where water could percolate freely.
