THE DISCOVERY OF BRACHIOPOD FOSSILS FROM LOWER PART OF BENXI FORMATION(MID-CARBONIFEROUS), LIAONING PROVINCE AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE

Liu Fa
The described fossils were collected from the lower part of Benxi Formation (formerly Penchi Formation)in Tianshifu region of Liaoning Province, Northeast China. There are 11 genera and 18 species (with 6 species being new,) including: (renew130)Schizophoria resupinata,Avonia sp. ,Reticulatia minuta sp.n., Ovatia ct. tenuistriata, O.kongjiabaoensis sp.n. ,Linoproductus minor sp. n. ,L. kongjlabaoensis sp. n.,L.cf. corrugatus, L.cf. praelineatus,Brachythyris subquadrata sp.n., Choristites pseudobis-ulcatus, C. tianshifuensis sp.n.,Martinia sp.,Pugnax swallowiana, Stenoscismu sp..In North China platform the Benxi Formation was formely correlated with Westphalian of Europe and Moscovian of USSR based on Fusulina and Fusulinella and abundant Choristites, Neospirifer, Brachythyrina etc. The fauna mentioned above are characterized by Linoproductidae, which closely resembles to the fauna of Lower Carboniferous, and some of the species are common in Visean. Onlyafew Choristites present in the fauna, but they are primitive forms with simple costae in sulcus and partly bifurcated costae laterally which had only been reported from Bashkirian beds in USSR and lower part of Mid-Carboniferous in Xinjiang Province corresponding to Bashkirian. As mentioned above, the fossil assemblages of Benxi Formation can be divided intoan upper part and a Lower part. The former is characterizedby Fusulinella and Fusulina with abundant Choristites, Neospirifer, and Brachythyrina, which are typical Westphalian or Moscovian index fossils, while the lower assemblage is characterized by Linoproductidae withafew primitive Choristites. Fusuline zone Eostaf-fella subsolana was discovered in its upper part with Profusulinella indicating that the lower part of Benxi Formation is Bashkirian in age. So a new name-Tianshif u Formation is proposed for it, which can be compared with the Jing-yuan Formation of Gansu Province, and Benxi Formation is restricted now to its upper part which is equivalent to Yangfugou Formation of Cans and can be compared with Westphalian of Europe or Moscovian of USSR.
