A METHOD FOR IDENTIFYING PRIMARY MAGMA——EXAMPLES FROM P ICRITE AND ALKALI BASALTS

Based on the previous study, the MgO-Fo-FeO diagram is rebui lt via Fe-Mg distribution coefficient between olivine and melt. The advantage of t he new diagram is its widely applicable, e.g., picrites, basalts and shoshon ites. It is also pointed out how the diagram is applied. To show how to recover the composition of primary magma and to explain the petrogenesis, the picrites f rom the Emeishan large igneous province and Holocene alkali basalts from the Jin gpohu, Heilongjiang province, are taken for examples. It shows that some of picr ites represent primary magma, some of them have excess olivines whereas some are evolved magma. Pyroxene-phyric basalts closely associated with picrites are gen erated by fractional crystallization of olivines from picritic magma, whereas fl ood basalts that are dominated in the Emeishan large igneous province are not pr oduced by a simple fractional crystallization from picritic magma. In contrast, all alkali basalts from the Jingpohu area are evolved magma. However , basani tes are relatively low evolved while tephrites are highly evolved.
