Some New Knowledge on Subdivisions and Age of Wuyun Formation in Jiayin of Heilongjiang, China

There have been controversies on the subdivisions and geological age of the coal-bearing Wuyun Formation in Jiayin of Heilongjiang, China. Recently, the authors have found the early Danian florule characterized by Tiliaephyllum tsagajanicum, including mega- and microfossil plants, from the lower part of the Wuyun Formation in the Baishantou section area of Jiayin along the right bank of the Heilongjiang River. Based mainly on the discovery, the authors proposed the Wuyun Formation subdivided into two members: the lower member (Baishantou Member) of the formation representing the lower Danian; and the upper member (Coal-bearing Member) representing mainly the upper Danian. Correlating the Wuyun Formation to its equivalents in the Bureya Basin of Russia, the authors consider that the Wuyun Formation is basically corresponding to the Upper Tsagayan Formation and the upper part of Middle Tsagayan Formation in the Bureya Basin. The plant fossils collected previously from the Wuyun Opencut Coal-mine, are probably aged in late Danian only.
