ORE-FORMING CONDITIONS FOR THE EARLY PROTEROZOIC LARGE-SUPERLARGE BORON DEPOSITS IN LIAONING AND JILIN PROVINCES, CHINA

Large-superlarge boron deposits in Liaoning and Jilin Provinces are well-konwn in the world, both for their ore quality and for their quantity. The Archean craton in eastern Liaoning was formed at about 2 500 Ma. Mantle upwelling in the early Proterozoic led to the uplifting and extension of Archean continental crust and the formation of Liaoning-Jilin rift trough. With the development of deep faults along the trough axis, hot brine ore-forming basins were developed due to the occurrences of deep faults along the trough axis. Hot spring and exhalation related to volcanic activities brought huge quantity of B-,Fe-, and Mg- bearing fluids from the mantle and the lower crust up into the ore-forming basins, which was the most important factor for the formation of large-superlarge boron deposits. Since the δ 11 B values (from +9‰ to -11‰) of boron ores are similar to those of evaporites of oceanic facies, the borate deposition from hot water could be greatly affected by evaporation. Boron was originally deposited as magnesium (or magnesium iron) borates, which were metamorphosed into suanite or ludwigite deposits during the amphibolite facies regional metamorphism at the end of early proterozoic.
