A DISCUSSION OF NEW PROSPECTS FOR GAS FIELD EXPLORATION RELATED TO THE TAPHROGENIC MOVEMENT IN SICHUAN BASIN
Natural gas has been exploited in Sichuan Basin for many years byusing anticlinal traps. Recently some new seismic exploration data havebeen obtained from the Guang Yuan-Wang Cang area of northern Sichuanand the Ying Shan-Qu Xian area of central Sichuan. An obvious discor-dant relationship has been found between the Yangxin limestone (LowerPermian) and the overlying formation both in strikes and in shapes ofstructures. This phenomenon is discussed from the taphrogenic movementview point. A tension fault block system formed by the Emei taphrogenicmovement of the Upper Permian is suggested. These fault blocks may becomenew prospects for natural gas exploration in Sichuan Basin. Taphrogenic movement had an important effect in the formation, accu-mulation, and entrapment of gas fields in some areas of Sichuan Basin. Themost promising areas are the hidden structures in the western part of Hua-yingshan and Tingzipu in the northeastern part of Sichuan Basin.
