SOME LATE TRIASSIC(CARNIAN)SCLERACTINIA FROM NORTHWEST SICHUAN

Duan Lilan
The fossil Scleractinids described and illustrated bere were collectedfrom the lower part of Hanwang Formation, Carnian Stage of the UpperTriassic in Mianzhu, Anxian, and Jiangyou Counties in northwestern Si-chuan Province. The coral fauna are mainly preserved in greyish oolitic, bioclastic and oncolitic limestones in association with Ammonites, Bivalves.Based on these fossils, the Hanwang Formation is regarded as Carnian Sta-ge. The collection consists of nineteen species representing ten genera infive families, of which seven species are considered to be new. Among these Scleractinids, the family Thamnasteridae and Montlival-tidae are abundant both in genera and in species. The genera Astraeomorphaand Thamnasteriomorpha are identified for the first time in China. Most of the Scleractinids found in Hanwang Formation are widely dis-tributed in the Upper Triassic of Europe, North America and Asia. In Chinathey have also been found in Yunnan, Qinghai and Tibet. It is suggestedthat Thecosmilia clathrata Emmrich—Astraeomorpha crassfsepta Reuss assem-blage zone can be established in the Upper Triassic in China. It can befavourably compared with the Scleractinids horizons from the Upper Tria-ssic of other continents.
