DISCUSSION ON THE TECTONIC SETTING OF THE PERMIAN EMEISHAN RASALTS, SOUTHWESTERN CHINA——An evidence of trace element geochemistry

Based on the characteristics of trace elements geochemistry and Sr, Nd isotope ratios, and the comparison with the basalts of different tectonic settings, this paper deals with the enrichment of the subcontinental mantle of the southwest margin, Yangtze paraplateform, studies the petrogenesis of Emeishan basalts by partial melting, fractional crystallization processes. Emeishan basalts suit being a OIB-like basalt series, is similar to the basalts erupted in continental rift, such as Ethiopian rift, the Cenozoic rift system of Northern and Northeastern China. These conclussions are consistent with that based on the data of other geological researches. We suggested a possible dynamic mechanism: the enriched subcontinental mantle diapir or a mantle plume ascending (responding to the opening of the Tetheys Sea?)causing the Permian rifting or Emei Taphrogenesis (Luo Zhili, 1981)in the southwest margin of Yangtze paraplateform. The faults of northwest and northeast trend may play an important role in the basic magma evolution and eruption. The characteristics of trace ele- ment geochemistry can provide important imformation of tectonic setting of the eruption.
