Considering the close relationship among the arrangement and the size of structure unit and deformation and strength of soil, three quantitative indices to evaluate the microstructure directionality of cohesive soil are put forward, such as, mean direction angle α , directional angle and coefficient of two dimensional shapes R i : Through the information obtained from the SEM photo by means of computer, the quantitative test method of microstructure of cohesive soils is presented, a computer program of DIRECT.FOR is written out, and many directionality parameters which can be used to evaluate the properties of microstructure unit of cohesive soil can be easily obtained through this computer program. A method quantitatively to evaluate the directionality of microstructure of soil is suggested, using the directional distribution function D(j) and frequency distribution function F(i) histogram to analyses the directionality of microstructure of undisturbed loess, loessial soil and soft soil quantitatively. Soil with different structural types corresponds to the different distribution functions. Using the directional distribution function D(j) to analyses the directionality of structure unit quantitatively in the process of creep deformation with different time, the directionality is different in the different steps of soil creep, testifying the theory that the failure of soil is caused by the displacement and adjustment of structural unit under the effect of a long term loading is reasonable.
