Study on the deformation and failure mechanism of consequent slopes at a dam site of a hydropower station in southwestern China

Because of the variation of the dip angels of rock strata, the consequent rock slope at the right dam site of a hydropower station in southwestern China shows special deformation and failure characteristics. The authors investigated the phenomena of the slope deformation in the slope cutting and thought that the variation of the rock strata was the main factor controlling the slope failure. Based on these, a slope deformation evolution pattern and its conceptual model were established. The fundamental mechanism model was sliding-bending with local shearing failure. Furthermore, a numerical modeling was carried out for the slope. The results show the displacement at different positions along the rock strata with the slope cutting and reveal the similar pattern indicated in the conceptual model. The achievements had been used to help the consultant to make the reasonable countermeasures of the slope protection.
