Deformation features and kinematic meaning of fault zones on the east margin of the Baoshan terrane, Yunnan, China

On the basis of interpretation of the remote sensing image and field structural section measurements, through studying the basin and rock construction features controlled by faults, macroscopic characteristics of fault zones, tectonic petrofabric, and microstructures, combined with the results of geophysical survey and geochronology, associated features of faults, folds and molasses-basins, this paper concludes the following conclusions. Firstly, the Changning-Yingpan fault zone, Kejie fault zone, Mengboluohe fault zone and Daqiao fault zone are the four main fault zones on the east margin of the Baoshan terrain. The Changning-Yingpan fault zone, Kejie fault zone, and Mengboluohe fault zone are normal faults controlling basins and lithologic features in Variscan, then, were reversed into thrusting nappes during Mesozoic-Cenozoic. The Daqiao fault zone is a superficial thrusting nappe formed in Mesozoic-Cenozoic. Secondly, these four main fault zones all have geological features of thrusting compression and weak strike-slip, and the petrofabric feature of single axis compression in Mesozoic-Cenozoic 〔(71.61.1)Ma~32.1 Ma〕. These features show that the paleotectonic stress fields are in the east-west direction. And this indicates that these four main fault zones experienced the deformatin in an united paleotectonic stress field, reflecting the kinematic feature of the superlayer sliding and overriding from west to east. Thirdly, the Changning-Yingpan fault zone is a listric low angle fault incising the bottom of the sedimentary cover; and it is not only the boundary fault between the Baoshan Terrane and Lincang Terrane, but also the main overriding fault of the arc thrust fold belt. Fourthly, during Mesozoic-Cenozoic, on the east margin of the Baoshan Terrane, the superlayer had the kinematic feature of sliding and overriding from west to east. And the east margin of the Baoshan Terrane is a Mesozoic-Cenozoic 〔(71.61.1)Ma~32.1 Ma〕 arc fold-nappe belt.
