Analysis of joints from the Meso-Cenozoic tectonic stress field in the west section of south Dabashan fault-fold belt in China

The tectonic stress field in the west section of south Dabashan fault-fold belt in Sichuan, China, is inverted from the data of conjugate joints and slickensides with movement indicators. The early plane-strain conjugate joints formed during the late Jurassic to early Cretaceous and the directions of principal stress were σ__1 NE-SW, σ__2 vertical. Immediately subsequent "Flat-ramp" fault-like joints and the conjugate joints with horizontal intersecting lineation still kept σ__1 NE-SW oriented, but σ__2 changed to NW-SE orientation. Reverse-tend longitudinal joints formed along with the main folds in this area during the late Cretaceous to Eogene under NE-SW -oriented σ__1 and NW-SE-oriented σ__2, which are followed by strike-slip cross and oblique joints when the σ__2 became vertical. The Eogene dextral -tend longitudinal joints were still the previous longitudinal joints, but had a new movement direction under N-S compression. By similar means, the previous strike-slip cross and oblique joints turned their motion into reverse slip under the compression of NW-SE direction at the late Eogene. The sinistral and extensional activity of longitudinal joints occured in the Neogene and Quaternary, and their stress fields were σ__1 E-W, σ__2 vertical, and σ__1 vertical, σ__3 NE-SW, respectively. The forces responsible for multiple phase stress fields in this area were derived from, respectively, the southwestward thrust of north Dabashan nappes from the late Jurassic to Eogene, the northwestward thrust of "Jiangnan" nappes at the end of Eogene, and the southeastward movement of western Yangtze craton in Neogene and Quaternary.
