A study of the relationship between the volumetric strain and the ultrasonic S-wave velocities in dilatancy of rocks

Based on the triaxial tests,the relationship between the volumetric strain and the S-wave velocities in the dilatancy of different rocks is presented in the paper.The test results show that the stress value of the maximum volumetric strain is greater than the stress of the peak of the S-wave velocity but less than that of the compressive strength.Whatever the straight line part of the stress-strain curve may be,it is always possible to find out the rock stress threshold by the peak value of the S-wave velocity.The authors suggest that the method to calculate Poisson's ratio of rocks needs to be reconsidered.
